Brenton Panzich - Senior Lawyer
Brenton is a Senior Lawyer at Butlers Lawyers and practices in Criminal Law, Criminal Property Confiscations, Royal Commissions, Commissions of Inquiry and Regulatory Prosecutions.
Prior to joining Butlers, Brenton was the RSPCA WA’s Senior Lawyer responsible for their entire prosecutions practice and all civil forfeiture applications.
Brenton spent a number of years as a Federal Prosecutor at the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and as a Lawyer at the Corruption and Crime Commission. He completed his legal training at Jarman McKenna, a leading defendant insurance litigation firm in Perth.
During his studies at Murdoch University, Brenton was a paralegal at Legal Aid and volunteered for the Consumer Credit Legal Service.
Brenton is well versed in the Animal Welfare Act 2002 and the prosecution of animal cruelty offences, and the conduct of civil forfeiture applications.
In Brenton’s role as a Lawyer at the Corruption and Crime Commission, he assisted in serious misconduct investigations by obtaining telecommunications and surveillance device warrants from judicial officers and acting as Counsel Assisting in coercive examinations. Brenton also acted on a number of criminal property confiscation matters obtaining freezing orders, production orders and examination orders, following the conferral of powers on the Commission under the Criminal Property Confiscation Act 2000.
As a Federal Prosecutor, Brenton practised in all areas related to Commonwealth criminal law and appeared as counsel in the Magistrate’s Court, District Court and Supreme Court. Brenton also instructed counsel in jury trials in the District Court and Supreme Court and appeals in the Court of Appeal. Brenton prosecuted offences that include drug importation, customs, people smuggling, taxation fraud, social security fraud, bankruptcy, firearm, counterfeit currency and electoral offences.
Brenton retains an understanding of medical terminology due to commencing his legal career in an insurance litigation firm, practising in the areas of workers compensation, medical malpractice, motor vehicle injury and vocational regulation. This experience has become an asset when reviewing medical evidence in his practice as a Criminal Lawyer.
Brenton has seasonally taught Criminal Law at Murdoch University and the University of Notre Dame and is a member of the Law Society, Criminal Lawyers Association and Piddington Society.
Brenton achieved a Dean’s Letter of Merit in 2018 and 2019 for his sessional teaching in Criminal Law at the University of Notre Dame. The Letter of Merit recognises commendatory teaching performance and creating an effective and supportive learning environment for students.
