Rachel Porter - Lawyer
Prior to joining Butlers, Rachel completed her Practical Legal Training with Thomas Percy QC at Albert Wolff Chambers for 18 months. Whilst working for Mr Percy QC, Rachel gained an in-depth understanding of criminal law, and assisted counsel with a variety of complex matters, including Supreme, District and Magistrates Court proceedings for offences involving historical sexual assault, drugs, homicide and assault. She has also assisted on a number of criminal appeals in the Court of Appeal.
During her university years, Rachel clerked under the supervision of Simon Watters (also of Albert Wolff Chambers) and volunteered at the Mental Health Law Centre for three years.
Rachel is a member of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association and the Law Society of Western Australia.
Throughout her studies, Rachel was given many accolades including Highest Academic Performance, the Scribbler’s Publishing Prize and First place in Trial Advocacy.

Experience and Assistance with:
Has primary conduct of and has assisted Senior Counsel with matters involving large quantities of illicit drugs, including both possession and importation matters.
This has included reviewing the evidence, meeting with clients, preparing and assisting during trial and preparing and assisting with sentencing.
Has primary conduct of and assisted Senior Counsel with matters involving historical allegations of sexual assault and allegations involving multiple complainants, including trials and sentencing matters.
This has included reviewing the evidence, meeting with clients, preparing and assisting during trial and preparing and assisting with sentencing hearings.
Has primary conduct of and assisted counsel with matters including home burglaries and armed robberies, including trials and sentencing matters.
This has included reviewing the evidence, meeting with clients, preparing and assisting at trial and preparing assisting with sentencing hearings.
Assisted Senior Counsel with a number of serious assault matters, including Grievous Bodily Harm and Act or Omission with Intent. Assisted with matters that proceeded to trial and also with the preparation of sentencing submissions.
Rachel has worked on a number of homicide matters both at Butlers and through assisting Senior Counsel, including matters that have proceeded to trial.
This has included reviewing the evidence, meeting with clients, researching evidentiary issues and assisting with trial preparation and conduct.
Experience researching and drafting submissions for criminal appeals, both against sentence and conviction, in relation to the following grounds:
- Propensity and common law relationship evidence;
- Recent complaint evidence;
- Unsafe and unsatisfactory verdicts;
- Inconsistent verdicts; and
- Manifest excess and totality issues on sentence appeals.
